Aims and purposes

The Peartree Centre at Stanley Primary School is an 18-place gathered resource for children on the autism spectrum. The children are grouped by Key stage in three classrooms. The Centre’s approach to teaching and learning is underpinned by Behaviour Analysis and school wide Positive Behaviour Support.

The Peartree Centre has a multi- disciplinary team and approach to the holistic understanding of our students. We offer a team of two Behaviour Analysts, Qualified teachers and highly trained support staff. We also work with a team of Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational therapists to meet the needs of the students.

The Centre’s aim is to facilitate mainstream integration as much as possible, where it is in the best interest of the child and their peers. For some children, this may be intensive input to teach critical communication skills and learning to learn skills that once acquired may help integration with their peers. Other children may spend a significant amount of time in mainstream classes with their peers.

In addition if your child attends the Centre from Reception age entry, the Centre will assess your child through EYFS and KS1 to establish and assess whether or not your child’s needs can be effectively met in our Key Stage 2 model of delivery

We will teach a differentiated curriculum in order to meet the personalised needs of the children. As children make progress we aim to make their teaching and learning increasingly closer to a mainstream model, including group based teaching.

The Centre emphasises the teaching of functional skills, and the communication and social skills that will allow students to be as independent as possible within school, home and the community. We understand our students will have some barriers to their learning. We take a functional approach to discovering why behaviours occur, and will teach alternative ways for our students to communicate their needs. We understand that not all children learn in the same way, and we are able to adjust our teaching style to that of the learner.
